Xiaomi redmi 8a: the best budget smartphone (below € 100)

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

We can consider Xiaomi redmi eighth as the best budget smartphone for those who do not want to spend more than € 100. It is an entry-level dual sim smartphone with a design and quality of materials is not very common for this price range.

With a 32GB storage memory (expandable to 64) and 2 GB RAM, obviously it has little smoother performance but suitable for use unpretentious (it is better to minimize the operations and open app). The operating system is Android MIUI 9 10 Pie.

As for the processor, this budget smartphone incorporates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SDM439 Octa core at 1.95 GHz.

The redmi 8a has a LCD touch screen (Gorilla Glass 5) from 6.22 “with a resolution of 270 PPI (720X1520px). The display quality is not bad at all although a brighter screen would be the top. On the other hand, the camera quality is improved. It is a single 12MP rear camera (f / 1.8) and a front 8MP, both capable of recording Full HD video (30fps).

As for functionality, this redmi has all the main functions of a smartphone, including GPS. Absent the NFC module and unlocking with fingerprint.

If you have a budget a bit ‘more flexible, you can also consider the Xiaomi redmi 7, which has a slightly more powerful processor. The price is up by some 20 €.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

The Xiaomi redmi Notes 8T is undoubtedly one of the best smartphone under 200 €. The model has become very popular due to the excellent quality / price ratio.

This smartphone dual sim has an LCD panel from 6.3 “(Gorilla Glass 5) with a resolution of 1080x2340px (409 ppi), in excellent overall considering the price. In fact, it may be, for those not abituatato medium-large sized phones, a bit ‘bulky although it remains lightweight and easy to handle. The dimensions are compensated by the overall quality and the very nice design, with the rear shell made of glass and a plastic frame.

Aspects relate to the aesthetics improvable still too prominent chin (ie the lower part empty that could serve as a display) and the protruding rear camera, which is inconvenient for those who do not want to use the silicone cover supplied. Without the cover, in fact, the camera is likely to be scratched, and the cell is unstable on the floor.

With a 4GB RAM, the redmi Notes 8T has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 665 SDM665 2.0 GHz Octa-core, which allows a fairly smooth operation, even for not too serious gaming. As for the memory, you can choose between 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB but there is, however, the micro-SD slot to extend it.

The real selling point of this smartphone to below € 200 is the camera. We find a 13MP front and 4 rear. Of these: a standard 48MP (aperture f / 1.79), a wide-angle 8MP, a sensor for the depth of field 2MP (for bokeh effect) and a macro lens 2MP. Take pictures at 48MP you must select the dedicated mode (there is a zoom lens but just to crop the image). The picture quality is excellent in bright conditions, and start to lose detail with less light. Discreet video quality (4K, 30fps) and very satisfying that sound.

The autonomy is not bad: with a 4000 mAh battery ensures a full day (and even more) and offers a rapid recharge in an hour and a half. Finally, appreciated the presence of the NFC module.

Really, 5 Pro

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

The Chinese brand Realme, warranty Oppo, recently landed in Europe, it has already captured a large market share. The Realme 5 Pro is a smartphone with features almost identical to redmi just seen, with slightly better overall performance.

Even this Realme is dual sim and has an LCD display from 6.3 “(Gorilla Glass 3), very bright with full HD resolution + (409 ppi, 1080x 2340px), but the choice of design is different, however by the excellent build quality . We find a less prominent chin (most full-screen effect), and a plastic shell with geometric designs that create reflections of light and makes the room very original aesthetics. However, both the display and the body tend to retain fingerprints.

In terms of hardware specifications they are typically associated with more expensive products: the embedded processor is a Snapdragon 712 Qualcomm SDM712 Octa-core 2.3 GHz with Adreno GPU 616 and a RAM of 4 GB (also available versions with more RAM with a slightly higher spending). The memory is 128 GB and it is possible to extend it with the micro-SD.

Even in this case, the quality of the camera is above the average with wide dynamic range, detailed and balanced shots, even in non-optimal light situations. In fact, the photographic industry is very similar to that of Xiaomi Note 8T. There are 4 cameras, one of which is from 48 MP (aperture f / 1.79), a wide-angle 8 MP and two 2MP respectively for macros and for the details of the depth of field. The front camera is instead of 16 MP (f / 2) and the videos can be recorded in 4K at 30 fps.

As for autonomy, this smartphone integrates a 4035 mAh battery and provides a more or less intense day of use although it rarely exceeds two days.

In addition to the fingerprint you can unlock the phone with face recognition. Pity about the lack of NFC.

Huawei Nova 5T

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

Among the best mid-range smartphone we can not leave the Huawei Nova 5T which currently has a price of around 300 €. It is a dual SIM model which has specifications and features that could be defined as top of the range.

With the chip Kirin 980 octa-core 2.6 GHz, 6 GB of RAM and GPU Mali G-76 to 720 MHz, provides very smooth performance, no lag, even for gaming. The overall user experience is pleasant and there are all the features that we would like to have in a smartphone, including the NFC module.

This Huawei smartphone features an LCD display as 6.26 “with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 px (412ppi), the same dell’Honor 20 Pro we’ll see. It is a very bright screen, even in the light of the sun, and with detailed and natural colors.

As for design, the aesthetic is that of a premium product and all in all not too bulky (thickness of about 7,9mm). Built in glass and metal, it has the slightly protruding cameras, which can prove annoying to someone. Very original blue / purple color.

As for the photographic industry, we find 4 rear cameras Enhanced AI: The main 48-MP (f / 1.8), a wide-angle 16 MP and two 2 MP for macros and bokeh effect. The picture quality is good but not really impressive compared to other models in the same price range. Equally positive is the judgment on 32 MP front camera (f / 2). Satisfactory even videos in 4K (30fps), although not stabilized.

Next to the fingerprint reader (on the right side), is also available via facial recognition unlocking. The phone integrates a 3750 mAh battery that allows an average use for two intense days or for an entire day. Among the in the absence of audio output jack and only mono sound.

Lindahl X2

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

If your budget is less than € 300, another interesting option is the Realme X2. This smartphone dual sim, whose brand as we said is related to Oppo, offers a very affordable price.

One of the strengths is undoubtedly the display: it is a super AMOLED 6.4 “Full HD + (1080X2340 px, 403 ppi), very bright, with bright colors and a major ink coverage. The design, with metal frame and curved glass back (3D effect), is a bit ‘bulky, but it is the price to pay for a big screen (and beautiful).

As for the processor, we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730g SDM730 Octa-core 2.2 GHz with Adreno 618 GPU and 8GB RAM. The performances are those of a high-end product, with smoother user experience. The memory is 128 GB, and, unlike the pro model is expandable up to 256 GB through the micro-SD slot.

Unfortunately, in terms of software, the Android 9.0 operating system (now upgraded smoothly to 10) with a graphical interface customization Color iOS 6, has a little something to improve compared to competitors, but these are aspects that are not going to affect too much the ‘ end use.

The Realme X2 presents a camera Quad AI, with a 64 MP main (f / 1.8), the wide-angle 8MP and the usual two 2MP for macros and for the bokeh effect. The picture quality is quite satisfactory, with detailed shots, contrast and light balanced, even and especially in night mode. Above average also the quality of the front camera 32MP (f / 2) and 4K video (30 fps), the latter recently stabilized where it rests the smarpthone on a plane.

As for the battery, the integrated 4000 mAh allows a range in the media, perhaps less than what you would expect given the specifications. Autonomy allows you to get to a day of intensive use and at least 5 hours of active screen. The good news is the rapid charging with the adapter 30W.

Last note concerns unlocking with fingerprint, with which you should become familiar a little ‘to use it in an immediate way; It is still the face recognition.

ξ AO Mimi 9T

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

Xiaomi Mi 9T is probably one of the best mid-range smartphone the most popular of the moment, as well as a direct rival of Realme X2 just described. As per tradition Xiaomi, it is the quality / price ratio that is king.

This smartphone dual sim has an AMOLED display from 6:39 “Full HD + (403 ppi 1080 x 2340 pixels), very bright, with bright colors and with HDR support, in addition to the always-on mode. The design is decidedly premium, with an opaque metal frame and a rear curved glass. Unfortunately, it may be heavy and bulky, especially for those coming from the most compact smartphone. Again, we find a protruding camera.

In terms of hardware, it’s hard to ask for more at this price. The processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SDM730 Octa-Core 2.2 GHz with Adreno 618 GPU and 6 GB of RAM. Therefore promises good performance for a use quite versatile, as well as a low power consumption. In fact, autonomy is positive: you can get to conclude the two days with average use (4000 mAh battery). For the storage memory, you can choose between 64 GB or 128 GB, but this is not expandable.

As for the cameras, we find a pop-up front from 20 MP (F2 opening) and 3 rear, of which the main 48-MP (f / 1.75), a zoom sensor 2x 8 MP and a wide angle 13 MP. The quality of the shots is high, with sharp colors, fine detail and contrast / light balanced. The night mode or take pictures with little light do not reach the level of the top of the range but all in all, we can define the photographic industry very versatile.

Do not miss the NFC module, fingerprint reader (below the display) and unlocking with the sensor for 2D face.

Huawei P30

Best Smartphones In 2020: Which To Choose? (Comparison)

The Huawei P30, since its launch, has established himself with his older brother (the Huawei P30 Pro) as one of the best smartphones to medium-high. Of course, compared to the Pro version, this model offers lower performance, but remain good considering the price.

What immediately calls the attention is the compact and ergonomic design. It has in fact smaller and a smaller display than most of the models seen so far. The OLED display is a 6.1 “Full HD + (422 ppi 1080 x 2340 px) and offers bright colors and excellent legibility. In addition, it is possible to adjust temperature and color, as well as activate the always-on display mode.

The metal frame and the glass rear help give a premium touch to the aesthetics. Unfortunately, however, the camera is very inconvenient if protruding and leans smartphone on a plane. Too bad it’s not resistant to water as the Pro version.

If in terms of software many prefer the pure experience than Android or iOS Huawei hybrid, we can say that the performance and the overall user experience are good and smooth, thanks to the hardware.

As processor we find the famous Kirin 980 octa-core 2.6 GHz, GPU Mali-G76 MP10 and 6GB RAM. We are at the mid-range specifications, but these positively affect the battery life (3.650mAh) which, with an average use, can reach well into two days. The internal memory is 128 GB and is expandable with only a Huawei proprietary memory.

The photo compartment, equipped with artificial intelligence and optical stabilizer, is constituted by a front camera 32 MP (f / 2) rather good and 3 rear cameras. We have a main RYB (and not RGB) from 40 MP (f / 1.8), a wide-angle 16 MP and 3x telephoto zoom 8MP. The shots are surprisingly detailed and clear, of a quality comparable to that of many top of the range smartphone. Of course, the Pro version offers significantly higher results.

To release is the fingerprint reader below the display.

ξ AO Mimi 9

Among the best smartphone with a price around € 400, there is also the Xiaomi Mi 9, we can define an advanced version of 9T (actually, there is also a Pro version 9).

The Chinese smartphone presents an excellent display AMOLED 6.39 “Full HD + (403 ppi 1080 x 2340 px) with protective Gorilla Glass 6 and HDR10 support. The notch and chin are not at all intrusive, indeed are minimized. The design is very nice and strong (although it is not water) and similar to previous models of the brand, with a frame in shiny metal and glass back rounded.

In terms of processor, we find the excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SDM855 Octa-core 2.84 GHz with Adreno 640 GPU and 6 GB of RAM. The Xiaomi Mi 9 is available from 64 GB or 128 GB, but does not give the possibility to expand the memory.

Autonomy is good (3300 mAh battery) and allows you to get through the day without any problems. Much appreciated is the possibility of wireless charging (20W).

Beside the improved front camera 20 MP (f / 2), this Xiaomi smartphone offers a triple rear camera with artificial intelligence and automatic HDR. We find a 48 MP (f / 1.8), a “tele” zoom 2x 12 MP and a wide-angle 16 MP. The quality of the shots is higher than the average, especially in optimal light conditions. The result is not the same with little light but the phone still managed to ensure an acceptable quality (better to use night mode if it is dark). Worth noting is the excellent quality of 4K video (60 fps).

Nothing significant to declare for the rest: do not miss the NFC module, fingerprint reader below the screen and one for the face. Pity about the lack of audio jacks.

Honor 20 Pro

Another of the best smartphone under 400 € is the Pro 20 Honor. It shares many features with Huawei Nova 5T although, of course, has superior performance (especially the photographic industry) and some technical specification that makes the difference.

The display is an LCD 6.26 “Full HD + (412 ppi 1080 x 2340 px). This is not an AMOLED but still gives a good color coverage, brightness and legibility. One of the strengths regards the full screen effect, thanks to the presence of the front camera within the display on the left side (no central notch, therefore). Perhaps the only truly original design element.

Hardware side, as you would expect, we are faced with specific top of the range. What immediately calls the attention is a RAM of 8 GB and an internal memory of 256 GB. The processor is a Kirin 980 octa-core 2.6, with Mali-MP10 G76 GPU. Side software, however, the Magic UI (the Honor EMUI) is in fluid and complex offers everything you need.

The locking of the rear camera sees well 4: a 48-MP (f / 1.4) with optical stabilizer, a telephoto zoom lens 3x 8 MP (always with optical stabilizer), a wide angle of 16 MP and one for the macro 2 MP . The quality of the shots is high, even in low light conditions, however exceeding largely than that of other smartphones also more expensive. If artificial intelligence is turned on, the dark will automatically enter into the night mode. Even the 32 MP front camera (f / 2) and the recording of 4K video (30 fps or 60 fps) are noteworthy.

Thanks to the integrated processor and 4000 mAh battery, the range reaches at least a day and a half of use.

Among the most important are the lack of 3.5mm audio output and stereo audio no.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite

Among the best smartphones in the price range of € 400-500 recommend the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, a complete device with various strengths.

First, the display: a Super AMOLED 6.7 “from the undeniable quality, with excellent brightness and legibility and very balanced contrasts. With a Full HD + resolution (1080 × 2400, 393 ppi), the screen presents the HDR + support as well as the always-on mode and the blue light filter. Given the absence of notch (the camera is placed in a central position within the display) and a very small chin, the effect is that of a full-screen.

In terms of design, of course we are not talking of a compact smartphone, but it is constructed in such a way as to be ergonomically to maximize ease of grip. However, considering the price, it was expected more aesthetic, which includes a plastic shell and is not waterproof or dust, such as S10.

Now to the good sector hardware and software. The Samsung Galaxy Lite S10 presents an excellent processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SDM855 Octa-core 2.84 GHz with Adreno 640 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB internal memory. The latter is expandable up to 1 TB thanks to the micro-SD slot.

The user experience is smooth, with smooth and fast operations, thanks also to the operating system installed, Android 10 Samsung One IU 2.0, which on the whole is complete and flawless.

As for the photographic industry, this Samsung phone has a triple rear camera comprises: a main 48-MP (f / 2.2) with optical image stabilization, a 12 MP wide-angle and a 5MP for macros (the latter, as often it happens, much less important). The quality of the shots is top of the range with natural colors and balanced contrasts; interface and options remain similar to those of other smartphones in the same price range. Also good quality 32 MP front camera (f / 2) and 4K video (30fps), even if stabilization is not the best (best in Full HD).

Finally, autonomy is certainly a plus point: thanks to the 4500 mAh battery (fast charging stand 45W), with an average use, you get to a day and a half, and always at the end of a full day. Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging.

Huawei P30 Pro

The Huawei P30 Pro is without a doubt one of the best smartphone camera on the market and with greater autonomy.

The device has a curved design and waterproof (IP68), decidedly premium frame with an opaque metal, a glass rear and a top-quality display very scenic, full-screen and with a notch almost invisible. The display is an OLED 6.47 “with a resolution Full HD + (1080X2340px, 398ppi), HDR support, always-on mode and ability to change color and temperature.

In terms of hardware, we find the “good” Kirin 980 Octa-cora 2.6 GHz, with Mali-MP10 G76 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of internal memory. As Huawei P30, again, this is only a proprietary expandable memory of Huawei. The services are of quality, with a pleasant and fluid use (hardly is a phone that gets hot).

As for the camera, as we have said, we have a fund worth mentioning. The rear is composed of a main RYB (hence greater sensitivity / brightness compared to RGB) from 40 MP (f / 1.6) with optical stabilizer, an ultra-wide 20-MP, a telephoto lens stabilized 8 MP 5x zoom and a ToF sensor . The latter serves to create a better blurring effect of the background, measuring depth, distance and height of objects within the image; It is also useful to use the app for augmented reality. The shots are of a top quality range, very faithful to reality with excellent definition and contrast is balanced.

Even the front camera of 32 MP (f / 2) offers significant performance, as well as the video quality (4K, 30fps), optically stabilized, although it could be better at higher prices.

Finally, as already stated, the range is one of the best: with a battery of 4200 mAh (rapid charging 40W) you can not even get to 2 days with a light use (at least 7 hours of active display).

OnePlus 7T

Among the best smartphones around 500 €, there is also the OnePlus 7T that makes the quality / price a strength.

The mobile phone has a nice design that immediately gives the idea of a product resistant and quality, with a metal frame and a rear curved and opaque glass. It has compact dimensions but otherwise manages to keep in hand without problems. One of the main strengths is the display, a Fluid AMOLED 6.55 “Full HD + (format 20: 9) with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. This results in a fluidity and speed (no lag) difficult to overcome. Again, we find the always-on mode and the HDR10 + support.

As hardware, the processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus from 2.96 GHz, with GPU Adreno 640, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, but non-expandable type UFS 3.0, unrivaled in terms of writing speed and reading. It is needless to say that the performance is very good indeed lag; pleasant and complete is also the operating system, based on Android OxigenOS 10.

On the back there is a circular block dedicated to cameras: one with optical stabilizer from 48 MP (f / 1.6), a wide angle of 16 MP and a “tele” zoom 2x 12 MP. The shots are of quality and well-defined; Also the automatic HDR is not bad. Fair the 16 MP front camera (f2.2), even if it requires optimal light conditions in order to offer shots without graininess. Also good video quality (even at 4K 60 fps) and its stabilization.

In terms of battery life, the 3800 mAh battery allows you to arrive safely to 24 hours and with average use even at one and a half (rapid charging system 30W). It lacks the possibility of wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy S10 +: the best smartphone around 600 €

If you have a budget of around € 600, one of the best alternatives on the market is the Samsung Galaxy S10 +. It is a top of the range launched about a year ago that we can define complete. Design and Display, photos and video, hardware and software: there is little to complain about.

This Samsung smartphone has an AMOLED display 6.4 “very bright (1200 nits) and undeniable quality, with QHD + resolution (1440 x 3040 px, 522 ppi), although it is normally set to Full HD +. Of curved type edge-to-edge (the only interruption of the screen is the small block dedicated to the camera within the same), presents the Gorilla Glass protection 6, the HDR10 + support and the always-on mode.

The design is certainly premium (metal and glass, waterproof and dustproof) and enjoyed by many: thinner and lighter than the standard model, however, can not be very ergonomic, especially for those not used to this type of device.

The hardware gives the best of itself also thanks to the software, the One IU of Samsung. The performance of this smartphone are really good with smooth and fast user experience, with no lag or overload problem of operations. We find a processor Exynos 9820 octa-core 2.7 GHz, with GPU ARM Mali-G76 MP12 and 128 GB RAM, expandable up to 1 TB (you can also aquistare the 512 GB or 1 TB version).

As for the photographic industry, it is one of the best in terms of software in terms of quality of the shots, with high definition and colors faithful to reality. The locking rear cameras is presented as an oval-rectangular strip as follows: a main 12 MP (opening from f / 1.5 to f / 2.4), a tele zoom 2x 12 MP (f / 2.4), both with optical stabilizer, and a wide-angle 16 MP (f / 2.2.).

We find excellent quality even in the dual front camera (10MP f / 1.9 + sensor 8MP f / 2.2 for the blurring effect) and video recording (4K, 60fps), with a very accurate autofocus and excellent stabilization .

The integrated battery in the Galaxy S10 Plus is 4100 mAh provides a range average, allowing up at the end of the day. Interesting to trick that point of view the reverse charging, or the ability to recharge other devices in wireless manner (including wearable Samsung)

Finally, appreciated the presence of the audio jack, rare in this price range.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

For those who want a truly “big screen”, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is certainly one of the best top smartphones of the range, with a price under 900 € (there is also the 5G version).

diamond tip of this is precisely the smartphone display, a Dynamic AMOLED well 6.8 “QHD + (1080 x 2340 pixels, 386 ppi), edge-to-edge, curved. The quality is excellent, with a good color coverage (you can choose between the Vivid profile and that Natural), excellent brightness, HDR10 support and always-on mode.

The design denotes build quality (glass and metal frame and class IP68: resistant to water and dust), even if the dimensions do not go unnoticed and ergonomics is certainly not the forte of this Samsung.

Special features of this smartphone is the possibility, as in the best moment of the tablet, use a dedicated stylus hidden in the chassis, the S-Pen, very helpful to take notes and convert them into digital format (with digital fonts).

As nell’S10 +, also in this hardware and software model (One IU 1.5) they are combined skillfully to provide impeccable performance and user experience sliding and top of the range. The processor is an Exynos 9825 Octa-core 2.73 GHz, with GPU ARM Mali-G76 MP12, 12 GB RAM and internal memory (the fast UFS 3.0) 256 GB or 512 GB. There is the possibility of extending up to 1 TB, but giving up the slot for the second Nanosim.

The quality of the cameras is indisputable super shots defined with light, a little ‘less in the dark, but still among the best in class. We find in the rear block a main 12 MP (f / 1.5-2.4), a tele zoom 2x 12MP (f / 2.4) (both optically stabilized), an ultra wide by 16 MP (f / 2.1) and the ToF sensor to calculate the depth and have a more realistic blur effect.

From the front, we have instead a good 10MP camera (f / 2.2.) But does not have the ToF sensor present nell’S10 +. Equally excellent is the recording of 4K video (60 fps), with good stabilization and Fire Live with the interesting, useful especially for lovers of IG stories and the like.

In terms of battery life, the duration of the 4500 mAh battery totaled values in the media, ensuring a full day with a use not too intense (quick charge 45W). It also has wireless charging, as well as the reverse to charge other devices.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Among the best Chinese smartphone top of the range we can not overlook the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. It is a 5G smartphone with a considerable price (about 1000 €) but the specifications and repay overall performance.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has a great display Fluid AMOLED 6.78 “with a refresh rate of 90Hz (thus high fluidity), Full HD + resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels, 386 ppi), protection Gorilla Glass, HDR10 + support and always- mode on. The materials are quality (back in frosted glass and metal frame) and the design is nice and strong (although not water, no IP certification). This smartphone can not be defined neither compact nor light, but it holds quite well in hand and is not slippery, despite the curved screen to the sides.

Performance is very good and in line with what you would expect considering the price: the software is complete (11.0.7 MIUI based on Android 10) and hardware powerful “.” We find the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 865 SDM865 Octa-core 2.84 GHz, Adreno 650 GPU, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of non-expandable internal memory. Unfortunately, it also lacks the slot for the second SIM. On the contrary, it is worth mentioning the excellent stereo sound, one of the best in class.

The photographic industry is one of the best (and most balanced) between the top of the range and is composed of 4 rear cameras: a main from 108 MP (f / 1.7) with optical image stabilization, a wide-angle (separated from the rest of the block and that also it deals with macro) 20 MP and two zoom lenses (16 MP, 2x, for portraits; 8 MP, 5x). The shots are well defined and detailed, and also the night mode does an amazing job, keeping colors true to life. Also good 20 MP front camera (f / 2:45), who loses a few shots if the environment is dark.

The videos can be recorded in 8K to 30 fps, even if, as in most other smartphones in the same price range the quality and stability can be improved (it is preferable instead 4K at 60fps).

Finally, autonomy is worthy of note, with a 4500 mAh battery that allows you to arrive without problems at the end of the day with heavy use and fast recharge 50W (three quarters of an hour). It also has wireless charging at 30W and the 10W reverse.

OnePlus 8 Pro: the best Chinese smartphone of the moment

Another of the best Chinese smartphone is the new OnePlus 8 Pro, which is characterized by a hardware-software combo really high level. Again we are talking about a fairly high budget (the highest in the brand) but in line with the performance.

This OnePlus has a curved display (edge-to-edge), a Fluid AMOLED 6.78 “QHD + (1440 x 3168 px, 513ppi), with a refresh rate to 120Hz well, the top of fluidity. It is one of the best of the moment panels (made in collaboration with Samsung), bright (1300nits) with support HDR10 +, excellent color rendering, different modes (night, reading, black & white, etc..) And interesting features (even for playback video).

The design is that of a premium product (waterproof, IP68), with glass body and metal frame, both satin. The smartphone is actually a bit ‘bulky, but overall you can not use well (is not slippery and does not retain fingerprints). The camera block is very protruding but, unlike other models, is located in a central position, thus being less annoying when support him on a plane (though remains the danger scratches).

In terms of components, we find the top processor Snapdragon 865 Octa-core range from 2.96 GHz, GPU Adreno 650, 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, 128 GB or 256 GB of internal memory, not expandable. However, there is support the 5G network. Even the software is of the highest standard and complete (OxygenOS based on Android 10) and with the hardware, makes this device a powerful “machine” capable of withstanding heavy operations, continuing to offer a flawless experience.

Even the photographic industry is very respectable, although there are better choices for those considering the camera the No. 1 factor in purchasing. The photos are still defined and quality (even at night) and balanced lights. Later we find the main sensor with optical image stabilization, a Sony IMX 689 from 48 MP (f / 1.78), a 48 MP wide-angle (f / 2.2.) A telephoto zoom lens 3x 8 MP (f / 2:44) and a room 5MP color filter (an addition for shots with filters). From the front, however, we have a good camera 16MP (f / 2:45), a Sony IMX 471.

As for the video you can record 4K at 60 fps (though better at 30 fps with stabilization), the sound is above average (3 microphones) and there is a movie mode (21: 9).

To end with a 4510 mAh battery, battery life is satisfactory, the category average, but the rapid charging, even and especially wireless 30W (the latter to the middle of the battery is very popular with only half an hour) .

Apple iPhone 11 Pros: one of the best smartphone for battery (and cameraphone)

How not to mention Apple, or rather the iPhone, the list of best smartphones top range? The iPhone Pro 11 is the right compromise in terms of hardware / performance and design, than the rest of the line 11 (11 iPhone and iPhone 11 Pro Max).

The smartphone is more compact compared to other phones in the same priced off band, with a display “Super XDR Retina”, an OLED 5.8 “with a resolution of 1125 x 2436 px. Just the screen is one of the strengths: well-defined colors and details, fluid and especially bright (800 nits outdoor, 1200 when reproducing content in HDR10). Interesting also support Dolby Vision and true tone mode, which allows the color of the display to adapt to the surrounding environment.

The build quality is not in doubt since we are talking about Apple: this model is also waterproof and dustproof (IP68). It has a retro matte satin glass (polished only in the part devoted to camera) and a polished stainless steel frame. As we have said we are one of the best compact smartphones of the moment.

In terms of hardware, the choice is top of the range: The processor is the new Apple 13 Bionic (2x 2.65 GHz Lightning + 4x 1.8 GHz Thunder), with GPU quad-core (owner), 4 GB of RAM and internal memory 64 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB, not expandable. Unfortunately, the basic model of 64 GB is limiting, considering the price. The performances are excellent, in every situation, even in case of intense use and heavy operations (gaming, etc.).

When the iPhone Pro 11 is not dual sim, as the second slot is dedicated all’eSim, not yet supported by Italian operators. Noteworthy is instead the facial recognition system Face ID that allows rapid release (and safely) smartphone.

Do not need no introduction the iOS operating system, the experience of flawless use and exclusive Apple ecosystem. Of course, the iPhone is not for everyone, but once you try it is difficult to go back.

Also excellent photographic industry, composed of a triple rear camera composed as follows: the main sensor 12 MP (f / 1.8), tele 12 MP (f / 2) and 12 MP ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.4 ). The quality of cameras, software and steps is one of the best around, in all conditions, even in low light. Good night mode, which is activated automatically. Even the front camera (12 MP, f / 2.2) provides good shots, as well as the slow motion mode for videos. The latter may be recorded in 4K at 60 fps (both front and postreriormente). The iPhone Pro 11 is confirmed as one of the absolute best cameraphone.

The 3046 mAh of lithium battery, combined with the hardware, provides excellent autonomy, promising to get through the day even with a more or less intensive use (more than 7h of active screen). Available fast charging from 18 W (50% of the battery in 30 minutes) and the wireless, which remains a bit ‘slow.

iPhone 11 Pro Max e iPhone 11

Of course, those who want a larger display and is not afraid of the size (and budget), can consider 11 Pro Max. Those who prefer a more compact device and want to spend less (with some sacrifice on performance), can consider the iPhone 11 (classic).

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G: the best 5G smartphone

We end the selection with what we consider the best 5G smartphone of the moment: the new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (5G).

This smartphone has a Dynamic AMOLED display from well 6.9 “QHD + (1440 x 3200 pixels, 511 ppi, format 20: 9), with a refresh rate of 120Hz, support HDR10 + and excellent always-on mode. Even in this case, the screen is the workhorse, with an unbeatable fluidity, excellent brightness and contrast. The design denotes suffered a great build quality (class IP68, resistant to water and dust), with a curved glass body (Gorilla Glass 6) and a polished aluminum frame.

The phone is certainly cumbersome and heavier than the other models but the grip and ergonomics are designed well. It turns out a bit ‘annoying blocking raised cameras (better to use a housing).

In terms of hardware, we find the powerful 990 processor Exynos octa-core 2.73 GHz with Mali G77 GPU, RAM and 12 GB internal memory, 128 GB (expandable), perhaps a bit ‘limited, considering the selling price. Of course, the icing on the cake is the 5G module, which makes it more “durable”. The hardware, using software (One UI based on Android 2.1 10) operating system, offer a user experience that is hard to complain. Also noteworthy audio, powerful and rich to be a smartphone.

As you would expect from a top of the range of this kind, the quality of the camera is excellent and included in this sense is what differentiates it most from the rest of the S20 line. Later, we have: the module 128 MP (f / 1.8) optically stabilized, a 12 MP fisheye lens (f / 2.2.), A telephoto zoom lens 4x (f / 3.5) and the ToF sensor to calculate the depth and have an effect best blur. The performance, both in terms of software that the final result, are among the best on the market and, above all, the zoom sensor behaves very well. Also good front camera (40 MP, f / 2.2) and record videos with excellent stabilization in 4K at 60 fps (front) and 8K to 24 fps (rear).

Autonomy is good, thanks to the powerful 5000 mAh battery, but is average (you’ll end up at the end of the day), especially considering the excessive consumption if you keep the screen at 120Hz.

Samsung Galaxy S20  e Samsung Galaxy S20+

If you have a smaller budget and want a more compact smartphone and you’re willing to make some sacrifice (especially with regard to the fund photo), you can consider the standard model Samsung Galaxy Samsung Galaxy S20 or S20 +, still top of the line.

Huawei P40 Pros: one of the best smartphone camera

If you are looking for a real cameraphone, we can not forget the new Huawei P40 Pro. It is one of the best smartphone camera quality available. However, some deficiencies, especially the lack of Google services, make it less versatile than others and is therefore not “for everyone.”

The Huawei P40 Pro has an OLED display with 6.58 “with a resolution of 1200x2640px (475 ppi), an intermediate option between Full HD + and qHD +. It is a quality panel, bright and well-defined colors and offers, in addition, the refresh rate to 90Hz (extremely fluid, without lag) and the HDR10 + support. The screen itself integrates, at the top, a special sound system that utilizes the screen vibrations to produce sound.

The design is more compact than other smartphones in the same price range, much appreciated and decidedly premium: before we find a curved glass on all four sides (quad overflow curves) and an aluminum frame.

The hardware is top of the range. The integrated processor is top of the line Huawei HISILICON Kirin 990 octa-core 2.86 GHz with Mali-G76 MC16 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory (fast, UFS 3.0), only expandable with proprietary memory. The smartphone is dual sim and 5G and also offers a slot for the ESim.

As for the software (10.1 EMUI based on Android 10), the more serious is the absence of Google services (Services Play and Play Store), and thus the classic Google apps pre-installed (Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, etc. ). Huawei offers its own app store and is still working to build their own ecosystem without regret Big G (some apps do not currently work or have limitations).

The real selling point of this is the quality of photos. Later, we find a main sensor stabilized RYYB from 50 MP (f / 1.9) (the largest in circulation), a wide-angle 40 MP (f / 1.9), a telephoto zoom lens 5x 12 MP (f / 3.4) and the sensor ToF to calculate the depth of field (the most precise edges and more accurate blur effect). It is a very versatile photographic industry which is able to offer excellent shots in different situations / mode, with selfie and very well defined portraits (32 MP camera (f / 2) and the depth sensor).

the video quality is also excellent: you can record 4K at 60 fps (both reversible and front), in timelapse or slowmotion and stabilization is good, although not to the Galaxy S20 Ultra lvelli just seen.

Autonomy is excellent thanks to Huawei’s ability to limit consumption and the 4200 mAh built-in battery: you get no worries at day’s end. Very good also quick and wireless charging, both 40W.

Blackview BV9800 Pro: the best rugged smartphone

If you are looking for an indestructible phone that is waterproof and resistant to dust, shocks and drops, the ideal is to consider a so-called rugged smartphone. Of course it comes to niche devices: are particularly suitable for those who use them while doing outdoor sports or work in more or less extreme conditions (ships, construction sites, rock climbing, sailing, etc.). Among the most famous brands of this type is Blackview. We can consider Blackview BV9800 Pro as the best smarpthone rugged of the moment.

It is compact (168.5 x 81 x 14,8mm) or lightweight (weighing 322g) but it is a smartphone from design all in all enjoyable and ergonomic, despite the robustness and the frame-reinforced aluminum. Of course, it is resistant to water (salt) and dust (class IP68 and IP69K) and possesses a MIL-STD 810 certification, therefore resistant to falls. The display is a 6.9 “IPS LCD Full HD + (2340 x 1080 px, 375 ppi) and excellent visibility / brightness outdoors.

In terms of hardware the processor is a Mediatek Helio P70 Octa-core 2.1 Ghz, with 6 GB RAM and an internal memory 128 GB, expandable to 256 GB (renouncing to the slot for the second sim). The software, however, is based on Android 9 Pie. The user experience is in fluid whole. Obviously performance is not comparable with the top of the range smartphone, but if you choose this phone you do it with different motives and priorities.

The same goes for the photographic industry, from which we expect no perfect results due to the nature of the product. The cameras, the software and the quality of the shots are very respectable. We have a front camera 16MP (f / 2) and 3 modules rear: the main 48-MP (Sony), a sensor 5MP and a thermal camera with FLIR technology can inviduare heat and record video and photos.

Like any rugged smartphone worthy of respect, autonomy is at the top: with a 6850 mAh battery can provide more than 3 days of average use (over 9h active screen). It also supports wireless charging.

Do not miss the NFC module, unlocking with fingerprint or facial recognition and, of course, GPS. Finally, there is also the walkie-talkie function.

How to choose a smartphone

Buying a smartphone is not an easy task since many factors come into play, many of which are technical in nature.

Design

Smartphones have undergone their own design process of evolution. In fact, some years ago, the surface of the screen was usually surrounded by blacks edges which, unfortunately, occupying useful space. With the evolution of the models, the space for the display has become increasingly wider, so that different models, in practice, are devoid of edges and the so-called chin (or at least they have one small). The display then becomes curved (edge-to-edge) and occupies all the possible space (full-screen), improving the overall experience.

Some smartphones, especially economic or midrange, exhibit the so-called notch, a sort of upper edge of the recess, it which the camera is housed. The notch was popular even among the top range of 1-2 years ago. However, the evolution of design led to its gradual disappearance and opt for an integrated camera directly on the display.

Dimensions and ergonomics

Among the most important factors to consider before buying a smartphone are the size and ergonomics, influenced to a greater extent from the screen diagonal, and ergonomics. Recall that the smartphone is most likely the object you’re holding longer during the day: the convenience is therefore a must.

Until a few years ago were the most popular display with a diagonal of 4 to 4.5 “, in the years manufacturers have moved towards phones with larger screens, which often exceed 6”. These devices, precisely because of the large size, have taken the name of phablet or a hybrid between smartphone and tablet.

Obviously, this increase has led to a greater difficulty in challenging and use the smartphone with one hand, but has improved the yield of multimedia content and the general visibility.

We have seen how the influence inch screen on portability and ergonomics of a smartphone. In a display it is important to also assess the type, resolution, and, more generally, the visual rendering.

They are commercially available and various display technologies, each of which provides a qualitative and performance level, even from energy absorption point of view, different. Among the most common:

The choice of the resolution appears to be very important if you plan to frequently use the smartphone for playback of video content. These are the most common resolutions in a smartphone, although some brands also offer intermediate solutions (Full HD +, QHD + etc.):

In addition to the resolution, another fact that often there is the density of pixels per inch (ppi): the higher, the better the image quality.

Another factor to consider, especially in the top of the range, the refresh rate, or refresh rate that in a nutshell is the number of times the display refresh its image. The higher the rate, the smoother the user experience of the display, especially with the entertainment / gaming etc. The refresh rate is measured in hertz (Hz):

Unfortunately, set a high refresh rate (90 or 120 Hz) often impacts heavily on battery life.

The growing size of the display make it more difficult to have a firm grip on the smartphone, especially if it is in motion. Anyone who happened to drop your phone on the ground, and we know that you can be more or less fortunate.

However, a great help to the fortune is offered by Gorilla Glass, a type of display more resistant, can withstand more effectively prevent accidental rubbing. a smartphone with Gorilla Glass is highly recommended, especially if your budget is high at stake for anyone who considers “careless”.

Materials and construction

The materials with which it is made a smartphone have a significant influence on the quality of construction and resistance to shock and scratches.

For anyone who intends to use an “extreme”, they are available so-called “smartphones rugged”, characterized by a resistance above the normal and special materials of construction. These can be used, for example, to work situations “special” (work on ships or in the pipeline), or while hiking or extreme sports.

Recently, a number of brands including Samsung and Motorola have launched some foldable smartphone models. This particular construction makes it possible to “expand” the display surface by simply bending along a seam (almost imperceptible when the screen is fully open).

These smartphones are still very expensive compared to the traditional models and arouse some concerns about the possible wear of the device given by continuous mechanical movement to open / close the screen.

The processor is the element that defines the performance of a smartphone. Then we speak of fluidity in the use, speed and promptness of opening and in the functioning of various app, even more “heavy” (eg. video games).

The processor or CPU is mounted on a SoC (System on Chip), alongside other elements, including the GPU. The processor is divided into multiple data processing units, called cores. Higher the number, the better the ability of the CPU to efficiently process the data. The processor speed, or the clock frequency, is expressed in gigahertz (eg 2.4 GHz processor octa core).

The RAM (Random Access Memory) is a volatile memory, used by the device for managing multitasking operations. In other words, the greater the RAM memory, the better the smartphone’s ability to handle multiple operations at the same time.

The memory storage indicates the memory space available for storing data, including apps, photos, documents, etc. Usually, the minimum capacity of a smartphone is 64 GB, the majority of the best smartphone has a ROM of at least 128 GB, but there are also solutions with great pia memory.

In addition, except for the iPhone and a few other models, most of the smartphone provides the possibility of extending the memory through the use of a micro-SD. Some smarpthone dual sim require sacrificing the slot dedicated to the second sim, while others require the use of a proprietary memory (see Huawei) and do not accept external SD.

In recent years, we have seen an evolution of Crazy cameras built into phones. If a few years ago the excellence could be reached only with some brands, such as Sony with its Xperia series, today the ultimate iPhone is represented by 11 Pro, which has totally changed the way we think about the cameras of smartphones, for quality, both of the photos that video, offer.

Mistakenly, many users are inclined to assess the quality of a camera by the number of megapixels offered. This represents nothing more than the resolution of the pictures taken, therefore, the number of vertical and horizontal pixels that compose the photograph.

On the market are available cameras with resolutions ranging from 8 to 40 MP even beyond. These numbers are certainly important, but should be considered along with other factors, including photo processing software.

The aperture is expressed with the letter f followed by a (eg number, f / 1.8). The lower this number, the greater the amount of light that enters the lens and, therefore, the brightness of the lens.

In recent years there then to record an increase in the number of models with more than one rear camera. In this case, each lens is responsible for performing a specific task (a wide-angle, telephoto lens to zoom, etc.). The various versions of the shutter are processed by the dedicated software, which synthesizes them to arrive at the best shot in terms of color gamut and brightness.
